Amazon.com Review
When dealing with a young baby or squirming toddler at diaper changing time, the last thing you need is a diaper pail that requires two hands. The Diaper Champ helps eliminate hassle—and odor—by providing convenient one-hand operation for quick disposals.

Even better is that this wondrous device takes regular garbage bags. There is no need to constantly buy brand name refills because the Champ can use the typical tall kitchen sack, plus grocery or most other plastic bags. Aside from the use of regular bags making it the economical choice, this feature also makes the Champ more flexible. While diapers will no doubt be the most thrown away item, this pail can also accommodate wipes, cotton swabs, tissues, and other baby essentials.

Functionality is simple: drop a diaper (or other trash) into the pail's top receptacle and flip the handle. To empty, just unlock the top and remove the bag. Standing about two feet high, the Diaper Champ's capacity is on par or larger than many of its competitors, usually only requiring a bag change once a week.

But the true test of any diaper pail is its smell control, right? Most moms we polled claimed the Champ the hands-down winner, and only a few had occasional escaped odors after 18+ months of use. Once toddlers have been introduced to solid foods using scented bags can help fight off any excess pail smell. Another great tip for keeping the Champ fresh is to quickly spray it down with a disinfectant when changing bags.

Editorial Review
In this corner... it's the Diaper Champ. Standing a bit taller than the competition, this wondrous contraption actually uses regular garbage bags, making it super economical (no refills, hooray!). It also holds a few more diapers than other pails we've tried. To use it, simply drop a diaper in and flip the handle. To empty it, just unlock it and remove the bag. But the true test of a diaper pail is its smell control, right? Overall, most moms thought that the Champ deserved its title, and only a few detected an occasional escaped odor or two. It is a bit difficult to open (hint: take it slow), but for those of you with a curious and experimental toddler in your house, this may be okay. --Melissa Wilson

5 out of 5 stars IGNORE BAD REVIEWS!! GREAT PRODUCT...NO BAD SMELLS HERE!!!!   March 19, 2004

I originally put this item on my baby registry because friends of mine highly recommended the use of a diaper pail. I decided to go with the Diaper Champ rather than the more popular Diaper Genie, because I didn't like the idea of having to buy special bags. Too costly and not efficient if you ask me!

THIS PRODUCT IS A LIFESAVER!! I HAVE NEVER HAD AN ODOR PROBLEM!

No one has ever come to my house and noticed 'diaper odor.' In fact, people who have been present while I changed my almost 3 month old son's diaper have been amazed at how the very 'potent' smell of the dirty diaper seems to disappear once I dispose of the diaper in the Diaper Champ.

For those who are experiencing odor problems, here are some suggestions which should solve the problem:

1. CHANGE BAGS FREQUENTLY!! I change mine about 1 or 2 times a week. For those who complain that the pail gets stuck, that is probably a good indication that the BAG IS GETTING TOO FULL!! Also, making sure that the tape on the diapers is secure will prevent that from happening as well.

2. YOU STILL HAVE TO CLEAN THE THING!! Hello, it does house dirty diapers!! All I do is wipe it down with some antibacterial wipes (takes about 10 seconds!!) and then maybe spray some Lysol in it and let it air out for a minute or two. SIMPLE AND IT WORKS!

Also, for those that complain that the Diaper Champ isn't as effective as time passes, keep the following in mind:
AS BABIES GET OLDER, THEIR DIETS CHANGES (aka SOLID FOODS!) AND SO DOES THE SMELL OF THEIR DIAPERS!

In talking with other parents, I get the same feedback - as babies get older and become toddlers, ALL DIAPER PAILS become gradually less and less effective until they are just no longer useful. Again, this is because as their diet changes, so does the consistency and odor of their stool, in other words, it gets stinkier!!!

All in all, this product is definitely one I would recommend and certainly worth the very reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use (one handed!) and no smells!   August 9, 2001

We have been using our Diaper Champ for almost 14 months now and we are very happy with it. It sits in the corner of our bathroom and we have never had any problems with odors at all (and we live in the damp and humid South, where odors of all kinds are generally rife). It is easy to install and change the ordinary trash bags, easy to clean, and most important, easy to use one handed - just insert folded dirty diaper and flip the handle. As the bag fills, you may need to flip twice to ensure that the weighted cylinder has completely pushed the diaper into the bag. For the first 9 months or so, we only needed to empty this once a week. Now that our son's diapers are a little larger, they take up more space, and we empty twice a week. We have never had any problems with anything like loose wipes getting stuck (we always wrap them in the dirty diaper). It is a bit difficult to get the unit open (the advice to take it slowly is sound), but now that our son is walking and exploring, I consider this a positive attribute!

Update (March 2005): My son has been out of diapers for almost 2 years now, but the Diaper Champ hung in there till the very end - easy to use, no problems with odors, and one of the best bargains among all of the paraphernalia required for the modern baby :-)

We registered for the Diaper Genie, which we received as a shower gift, but were sorely disappointed.... It takes two hands to dispose of a diaper (not an option with a squirming baby on the changing table). I discovered the Diaper Champ at our local Babies R Us (they have one in the mother's room), and was surprised at how easy it was to use. I also figured it must contain smells pretty well since it is used by many mothers with all ages of children. After researching it my husband and I decided to buy one, and ditch the Diaper Genie. We couldn't be happier with it. It can be used with one hand, contains all smells (my son is now 7 months old and has been on solids for the last month, so he is definitely stinky!), but best of all uses any kind of trash bags.... I read other comments that said after a while the seal stops containing the smells, but I am not sure what they are talking about. There isn't a seal, and it doesn't stink if you CLEAN it. Imagine having to clean a diaper pail?! I clean mine with a spray cleaner every time I empty it, and then I spray it with Lysol. I have yet to detect any kind of smell from it, but I imagine I would if I never cleaned it. I also read comments that you need to wear a gas mask to empty it--come on! It's a diaper pail filled with dirty, stinky diapers. What do you expect? In short, I would definitely recommend this product. If it's a choice between this and the Diaper Genie, buy this!

5 out of 5 stars Old one was great, this one's even BETTER!   April 25, 2006

First and foremost, it does what it purports to do: contains diaper stink. It can smell a bit when opened to change the bag (umm, it is full of dirty diapers, afterall), but it contains the stink beautifully while closed and in use. I also spray it with Lysol and let it air dry each time I change the bag, but that's probably overkill on my part.

Second, it uses ANY bags. Personally, we find Target bags (the kind they bag your stuff in at the checkout) to work very well. The handles loop over the 'tabs' inside the Champ (yes, they're still there - to answer a prior review), and then tie up quite nicely to pitch. Plus, they're completely free (a big plus in my book).

There's also no 'trick' to using it. No twisting this way or that. No pushing far enough down in. No mashing down of any handle to make it work. Just drop the rolled up diaper in the opening and flip the handle, the weighted cylinder does the rest. I do recommend making sure that everything is contained (ie. wipes, etc are rolled up in the dirty diaper), but that's just my preference.

BEST of all - this one's a BREEZE to open. The old one took some force to wrangle open to change the bag. Now all you need to do is push the button and lift. SO much easier, and a huge improvement to an already great diaper pail.

5 out of 5 stars Diaper Champ is the Best I give it 5 STARS !!!   October 10, 2001

I had the diaper genie for 14 months and just got tired of buying all those refills and just couldnt hanldle the smell anymore. I finally decide its time for a switch. I checked out all the diapers pails aviliable and decided on the diaper champ as it was rated the best. I have had it for over a month and no smell. I just love it not to mention the more expensive refills. I read all the reveiws good and bad(only a few) and just made sure to put the babywipes in the diaper and make sure theres no poop ozing from the sides before i throw in the diaper champ. I dont find it to be a hassle having to do this as i always did this before i had the diaper champ. Besides who wants to wipe up poop regardless of what diaper pail you own. Its bad enough we have to smell it during a diaper change and trust me it isnt pleasant.
I love the no fuss turn the handle and the diaper is gone. no opening a lid and getting slapped with poop odor. i give the diaper champ 5 stars and will buy the champ for a baby shower i have coming up. I dont have any problems with the latch. Its easy to open and remove bag when its time to change the trash bag. So if your planning on a diaper pail i say get the Champ and you will be very pleased.
